About The Position

Fayetteville Public Works Commission is seeking a skilled Power Plant Maintenance Mechanic to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining mechanical equipment through preventive, routine, and emergency maintenance activities. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, hands‑on maintenance experience, and a commitment to safety and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Understanding of operating systems, flow diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical maintenance practices in an industrial or power plant environment.
  • Hands‑on skills in welding, cutting, and pipe fitting.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate logs and reports.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with employees and contractors.
  • Option A: Associate degree or technical certification in mechanical technology or a related field Plus 2 years of mechanical maintenance experience in an industrial facility
  • Option B: High school diploma or equivalent Plus 4 years of mechanical maintenance experience as described above
  • OR An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Must be on call and able to report on site within a specified timeframe
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including physically demanding maintenance tasks.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, routine, and emergency maintenance on power plant equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, test, and repair pumps, valves, turbines, compressors, boilers, fans, piping systems, and related equipment.
  • Assist with testing mechanical equipment to determine optimal operating performance.
  • Perform layout, fabrication, rigging, and welding tasks.
  • Take accurate measurements for piping systems and steel fabrication projects.
  • Cut, clean, grind, hang, and paint structures and piping as required.
  • Oversee and coordinate work performed by contractor personnel, serving as a liaison to ensure work meets plant standards.
  • Maintain logs, reports, and maintenance documentation.
  • Work extended hours and participate in on‑call rotations as required.
