About The Position

The Overnight Residential Counselor will provide surveillance over a group of students in a residential setting just before, during and after sleeping periods until the first class begins or staff coverage. He/she may also monitor all residential activities, which support their residential students’ social, physical, intellectual, communication and emotional development.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years experience in a residential setting
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to remain awake throughout scheduled shift
  • Ability to keep company and student information confidential
  • Willingness to work a varied schedule
  • A minimum of conversational fluency in American Sign Language required, with native, or near-native ASL fluency preferred
  • ASL Classes may be required based on ASL fluency
  • Must be physically able to perform all duties of the job including restraining assaultive students when necessary, pursuing running students and participating in sports and recreation activities with students. Job may also include prolonged standing, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching above shoulder level as well as reacting quickly to minimize escalating behavioral outbursts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision and support to the residential students.
  • Responsible for supporting, planning or maintaining the residential activities and independent living skills to meet identified individual residential student and/or programmatic needs.
  • Utilize databases to ensure all externally and internally required reports are complete, accurate, and implemented on schedule.
  • Work collaboratively with TLC colleagues to facilitate students’ educational, social, recreational and life skills activities within existing programs.
  • The hired candidate must be able to remain fully awake throughout the entire work shift. Napping and/or sleeping is strictly forbidden, whether on duty or on break.
  • Be accountable for the general supervision of residential students and to remain on duty during emergency situations.
  • Remain awake and alert in his/her assigned dormitory unless instructed otherwise by the Residential Supervisor, Residential Director and/or Director of Student Services .
  • Maintain residential program’s expectations including the school policies and procedures.
  • Assist TLC staff with coordinating other related activities as deemed appropriate.
  • May be delegated and trained to conduct medication administration or certain medical procedure responsibilities for students.
  • May be required to drive students on field trips and/or to mainstreaming classes. Additional driving responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Department Supervisor and/or Program Leader.
