Outside Machinist (US Navy Submarine) Location Onsite at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery Maine Make meaningful contributions that fuel critical outcomes for some of the most complex government, defense, and intelligence projects. The SUB AIT program supports the In-Service Attack Submarines Program Office (PMS 392) under Program Executive Office Attack Submarines (PEO SSN) to achieve optimal submarine operational readiness by providing /production support, component repairs and technical support to accomplish repair, maintenance, removal/installation, troubleshooting and associated testing for Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) submarine maintenance availabilities. The efforts associated with this program will help restore and maintain the material condition and modernization of the fast attack submarines of the United State Navy. Outside Machinists (MO) General Marine Machinist (TSD MB): All work performed in connection with the removal, repair, overhaul and installation of ship's mechanical/ hydraulic equipment Outside Machinists (MO) Sail, Mast & Periscopes Machinists (TSD MK): All work performed in connection with the removal, repair, installation, alignment and test of submarine sail components. Includes mechanical work on thin and fat line systems. Outside Machinists (MO) Propulsion Mechanics (TSD MH): All work performed in connection with the removal, repair, overhaul and installation of ship's Propulsion equipment (e.g., Turbines, Reduction Gears, Shafting, Thrust Bearings, props etc.). Outside Machinists (MO) Steering and Diving Machinist (TSD ML): Work on steering and diving systems and components. System includes rudder, stern plane, and fair water plane removal, installation and alignment as well as anchor and anchor components.

Requirements

  • 2+ years' experience performing repair work on nuclear submarines within the trade they are being assigned.
  • HS/GED
  • Must be US Citizen.
  • Confidential Security Clearance or higher level required.
  • Personnel shall have at least 2+ years' experience performing repair work on nuclear submarines within the trade they are being assigned.
  • Personnel shall have DOW type "final" security clearance (DISCO authority with a minimum of a confidential clearance status).
  • At a minimum, all personnel shall be United States citizens and shall possess a final favorable adjudicated tier 3 investigation. Contractor personnel must have a Department of War Personnel Security Clearance (PCL) at the confidential level or higher.
  • TSD MB (General Mechanic): Experience repairing/overhauling ships' mechanical and hydraulic components (e.g. diesel engines, hatches, valves and pumps) similar to that outlined for TSD MB. Experience performing SUBSAFE work IAW NAVSEA 0924-062-0010 L/R (Submarine Safety Requirements Manual). Steam Plant Cleanliness trained and qualified IAW NAVSEAINST 9210.36F as implemented by Corporate Naval Shipyard Uniform Industrial Process Instruction 5050-450A.
  • TSD MK (Sail, Mast, Fairings and Periscopes): Experience repairing/overhauling ships mechanical components similar to that outlined for TSD MK. Specialized experience with removal, repair, installation, alignment and overhaul of submarine sail components and or mechanical work on thin/fat line systems. Experience performing SUBSAFE work IAW NAVSEA 0924-062-0010 L/R (Submarine Safety Requirements Manual).
  • TSD MH (Propulsion, Shafting and Turbines): Experience repairing/overhauling ships mechanical components similar to that outlined for TSD MH. Specialized experience with removal, repair, installation, alignment and overhaul of submarine turbines, reduction gears, shafting and thrust bearings. Experience performing SUBSAFE work IAW NAVSEA 0924-062-0010 L/R (Submarine Safety Requirements Manual). Steam Plant Cleanliness trained and qualified IAW NAVSEAINST 9210.36F as implemented by Corporate Naval Shipyard Uniform Industrial Process Instruction 5050-450A.
  • TSD ML (Steering & Diving Systems): Experience repairing/overhauling ships mechanical components similar to that outlined for TSD MB. Specialized experience with removal, repair, installation, alignment, trouble shooting and overhaul of submarine steering and diving systems/ components (e.g. rudder, stern plane, fairwater plane and anchor).

Responsibilities

  • Outside Machinists (MO) General Marine Machinist (TSD MB): All work performed in connection with the removal, repair, overhaul and installation of ship's mechanical/ hydraulic equipment
  • Outside Machinists (MO) Sail, Mast & Periscopes Machinists (TSD MK): All work performed in connection with the removal, repair, installation, alignment and test of submarine sail components. Includes mechanical work on thin and fat line systems.
  • Outside Machinists (MO) Propulsion Mechanics (TSD MH): All work performed in connection with the removal, repair, overhaul and installation of ship's Propulsion equipment (e.g., Turbines, Reduction Gears, Shafting, Thrust Bearings, props etc.).
  • Outside Machinists (MO) Steering and Diving Machinist (TSD ML): Work on steering and diving systems and components. System includes rudder, stern plane, and fair water plane removal, installation and alignment as well as anchor and anchor components.
  • TSD MB (General Mechanic): Open, inspect, repair and test components of submarine sea water, hydraulic and diesel systems. Inspect and repair hatches/water tight openings. Overhaul VH valves. ASW/MSW hull and backup valve repairs. Repair AHP valves.
  • TSD MK (Sail, Mast, Fairings and Periscopes): Perform repair and restoration work on thin and fat line systems. Remove, repair, install, align and test sail systems (periscope, masts, antennas).
  • TSD MH (Propulsion, Shafting and Turbines): Perform repair and restoration work on shaft, shaft couplings and vibration reducers. Overhaul main SSTG turbine. Inspect/Overhaul main reduction gears. Inspect/overhaul condensers, hot wells and associated components.
  • TSD ML (Steering & Diving Systems): Remove/refurbish and reinstall fairwater and/or stern plane components. Refurbish and align submarine steering and diving system linkages. Repair/replace anchor windlass and associated anchor system components.
