About The Position

General Dynamics NASSCO, a member of the General Dynamics Marine Systems business unit, specializes in ship construction, advanced ship repair, conversion, and maintenance for both commercial and national defense assets. The company is seeking 2 Outside Machinists for their Welding department in Norfolk, Virginia, to work the 1st shift. Requirements

  • Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Outside Machinist J4: Minimum of 5 (five) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Outside Machinist J4: Must meet all Journeyman 3 Outside Machinist requirements.
  • Outside Machinist J4: Must be able to furnish sizes and clearance and also recommendations to supervisor.
  • Outside Machinist J4: Able to read and use tech manuals and blueprints and specification items.
  • Outside Machinist J3: Minimum of 4 (four) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Outside Machinist J3: Must meet all Journeyman 2 Outside Machinist requirements.
  • Outside Machinist J3: Able to read and use tech manuals and blueprints and specification items.
  • Outside Machinist J3: Able to use and understand precision measuring instruments.
  • Outside Machinist J2: Minimum of 3 (three) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Outside Machinist J2: Must meet all Journeyman 1 Outside Machinist requirements.
  • Outside Machinist J1: Minimum of 2 (two) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Outside Machinist J1: Must be able to work on any equipment shown below with close supervision.
  • Experienced in machinery overhaul and installation and testing of winches (Electric driven Electro hydraulic), anchor windlasses, steering gear, air compressors, pump and motor alignments, valve repairs, diesel engine repairs, hydraulic trouble shooting repairs, reduction gear repairs, generator repairs, boat davit repairs, bearing fit-up & installation, gas turbine repairs, louvers, aircraft elevators, underwater hull strainer plates, cranes, brakes, resilient mounts, emitter belts, OD box removal/install, sliding pad eyes, rast track.
  • Propulsion experience of shafting repairs and alignment, fixed and controllable pitch.
  • Propulsion experience of propellers removed and installed.
  • Propulsion experience of rudders repair and installed.
  • Ability to operate grinder (fixed and portable), drill presses (fixed and portable), fixed presses, porta powers, hydraulic jacks, torches and torque wrenches.
  • Proficiency with assorted sizes of combination wrenches, socket sets, slip joint pliers, adjustable wrenches, wire pliers, hammers (ball pean, flat head, small mall), screw drivers (flat and phillips), vise grips, 6” scale- 12’ tape measure, snap ring pliers, micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, pipe wrench, punch set and chisels.
  • Must be able to go on vessels.
  • Visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature.
  • Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas.
  • Requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%).
  • Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment.
  • Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis.
  • Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required.
  • Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification.
  • Ability to work in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and be exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Assures that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished, no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
  • Assures that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (Example: special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc).
  • Assures that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs and etc.).
  • Assures that personnel are working as safely and as productively as possible maintaining quality control at all times.
  • Assures that a 30 minute cool down period has been accomplished in hot work areas.
  • Assures that the job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
  • Complete repairs or installation(s) as assigned with no supervision.
  • Responsible for effective, efficient and safe accomplishment of all assigned tasks.
  • Accountable to Foreman/General Foreman and customer for Safety, Quality, Cost and Schedule.
