We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Welding department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for 2 Outside Machinist to work 1st shift.

Requirements

  • Outside Machinist J4 • Minimum of 5 (five) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Must meet all Journeyman 3 Outside Machinist requirements.
  • Must be able to furnish sizes and clearance and also recommendations to supervisor.
  • Able to read and use tech manuals and blueprints and specification items.
  • Outside Machinist J3 • Minimum of 4 (four) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Must meet all Journeyman 2 Outside Machinist requirements.
  • Able to read and use tech manuals and blueprints and specification items.
  • Able to use and understand precision measuring instruments.
  • Outside Machinist J2 • Minimum of 3 (three) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Must meet all Journeyman 1 Outside Machinist requirements.
  • Outside Machinist J1 • Minimum of 2 (two) years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
  • Must be able to work on any equipment shown below with close supervision.
  • Experienced in machinery overhaul and installation and testing of all the following: 1. Winches (Electric driven Electro hydraulic) 2. Anchor windlasses 3. Steering gear 4. Air compressors 5. Pump and motor alignments 6. Valve repairs 7. Diesel engine repairs 8. Hydraulic trouble shooting repairs 9. Reduction gear repairs 10. Generator repairs 11. Boat davit repairs 12. Bearing fit-up & installation 13. Gas turbine repairs 14. Louvers 15. Aircraft Elevators 16. Underwater Hull Strainer Plates 17. Cranes 18. Brakes 19. Resilient Mounts 20. Emitter Belts 21. OD Box Removal/Install 22. Sliding Pad Eyes 23. Rast Track
  • Propulsion experience of the following: 1. Shafting repairs and alignment, fixed and controllable pitch 2. Propellers removed and installed 3. Rudders repair and installed
  • Tool requirements: 1. Operate grinder fixed and portable 2. Operate drill presses fixed and portable 3. Fixed presses 4. Porta powers 5. Hydraulic jacks 6. Torches and torque wrenches 7. Assorted sizes of combination wrenches 8. Socket sets 9. Slip joint pliers 10. Adjustable wrenches, 11. Wire pliers, 12. Hammers-ball pean, flat head, small mall 13. Screw drivers (flat and phillips) 14. Vise grips, 15. 6” scale- 12’ tape measure 16. Snap ring pliers. 17. Micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, 18. Pipe wrench, 19. Punch set and chisels 20. Other tools as identified and determined as needed.

  • Visual Requirements: The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.
  • Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis. Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Assures that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished, no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
  • Assures that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (Example: special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc).
  • Assures that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs and etc.).
  • Assures that personnel are working as safely and as productively as possible maintaining quality control at all times.
  • Assures that a 30 minute cool down period has been accomplished in hot work areas.
  • Assures that the job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
  • Complete repairs or installation(s) as assigned with no supervision.
  • Responsible for effective, efficient and safe accomplishment of all assigned tasks.
  • Accountable to Foreman/General Foreman and customer for Safety, Quality, Cost and Schedule.
