This position is for job seekers with no prior trades experience who are willing to complete a three-week unpaid training program to become an Outside Machinist. Newport News Shipbuilding, in partnership with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local community colleges, offers Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs. The Machinist Trainee program, specifically, is a 3-week (120 hours) unpaid program, running Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, offered at Camp Community College in Suffolk, VA. Upon successful completion of this training, individuals will be eligible for full-time employment as an Outside Machinist. Outside Machinists are responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of major mechanical components and systems on naval vessels during new construction, overhaul, or repair phases. This includes working with steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes, and various other equipment. The role requires the use of a wide array of tools, from basic hand tools to advanced machinery like torque wrenches, micrometers, drill presses, optical instruments, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, and lathes. The work environment is challenging, often involving tasks in diverse weather conditions, at significant heights on scaffolding or platforms, and within confined spaces on ships, demanding a strong focus on safety, precision, adaptability, and physical agility.
