About The Position

The Outside Machinist B position is responsible for the installation of various machinery on vessels, including propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, and other essential equipment. This role involves working from blueprints and utilizing hand tools to ensure proper installation and functionality of machinery, as well as conducting tests and inspections during dock and sea trials.

Requirements

• Knowledge of gauges, calipers, micrometers, lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters, and milling machines.
• Capable of reading blueprints.
• Prior experience as an outside machinist or boilermaker in a heavy industrial or shipbuilding environment.
• Vocational training in the field of machinist is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Work from blueprints and use hand tools, calipers, and micrometers.
• Layout passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for connections such as shafting and steam lines.
• Install below deck auxiliaries, including evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers, and connect them to steam pipe systems.
• Test and inspect installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
• Set up and operate machine shop tools such as a lathe, boring mill, planer, shaper, slotter, and milling machine to fabricate replacement parts.
