Outreach Phlebotomist The Outreach Phlebotomist is assigned to a medical group practice. They function as a liaison with the practice and tasks may include but are not limited to registering patients, order entry, collecting blood or other specimen types, processing specimens, and point of care testing. The Outreach Phlebotomist also performs client service duties related to registration, billing-related functions, client training and guidance as it relates to laboratory testing. The Outreach Phlebotomist delivers excellent patient and client service, answers patient/client questions, acts as a resource for patient information, and strengthens the relationship between the patient/client and the organization. MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES 1. Greets patients pleasantly. Answers questions regarding laboratory and facility procedures with courtesy and professionalism. Verifies patient identity using 2 patient identifiers. 2. Accurately inputs patient registration information and verifies existing information in system. This may or include NPL’s, BGSU clients, and Occupational Health Clients. 3. Inputs tests and diagnoses in Medicare compliancy program to verify eligibility. Explains procedure for failed tests and has ABN signed and routed to appropriate areas. 4. Proficiently collects and labels specimens from patients. Performs blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible Demonstrates knowledge of tubes or containers to use, volume of blood needed and associated test requirements by properly collecting the samples required for testing. Trains others in collection techniques. 5. Completes Waived Testing as needed at the practice. Documents results. Runs appropriate QC and keeps temperature, maintenance, and other logs as required. Assures that anyone running Waived Testing has been assessed for competence before testing. 6. Competently uses information systems to order (e.g., order entry, order retrieval, order review, order cancellation, add-ons, etc.). Accurately and completely fills out any required Laboratory paper requisitions, logs and forms. Performs materials management duties (inventorying, ordering, stocking) for the assigned location. 7. Properly processes specimens for analysis in a time-appropriate manner. Assesses specimen requirements for referral testing and troubleshoots any specimen requirement and/or referral testing specimen or order entry issues. 8. Communicates and troubleshoots any problem specimens in a timely manner. Works with providers or site Manager to correct issues. Takes accurate phone messages and lab orders and may provide written reports to providers.
