About The Position

Overview Job Summary: Demonstrates through behavior Decatur Morgan Hospital’s mission, vision and values. The Cancer Data Specialist is responsible for reporting all confirmed cases of cancer and benign brain related tumors to the Alabama Statewide Cancer Registry (ASCR) and coordinating bi-weekly Tumor Board (Cancer Conference) meetings. The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurate code assignment of all outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures and conditions as indicated in the patient medical record. Classification systems include ICD-10-CM, ICD-9-CM and current CPT edition, and all coding is in accordance with official coding guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the Health Information Management Association. All work is carried out in accordance with the Health Information Management department and Decatur Morgan approved policies and procedures .

Requirements

This specialist must have 2 year college degree in related field, RHIT, RHIA, CCA, or possess equivalent training/experience in coding and cancer registry nomenclatures/systems
2 years experience in the medical record field preferably in cancer registry.
Must possess in-depth knowledge of medical and anatomical terminology.

Responsibilities

Oversees the Cancer Data Base and all activities related to the Cancer Registry.
Provides development guidance of all standards as required by the Alabama Statewide Cancer Registry.
Responsible for abstraction of cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated at Decatur Morgan Hospital. This includes both analytic and nonanalytic cases.
Coordinates a biweekly cancer conference.
Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes for Emergency Department encounters.
Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes for ancillary encounters.
Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes for Decatur West Campus encounters.
Compile daily discharge/encounter list.
Compile report for incomplete records and monitor not final billed report.
Compile special reports as requested.
Coordinate with Case Management on patient status issues.
Coordinate with admissions on registration issues.
Complete daily patient lists and maintain reports for daily pre-bill audits.
Coordinate distribution of pre-bill results to respective coders.
Meet standards of productivity established by Decatur Morgan Decatur General Hospital.
Demonstrate a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail at all times.
Collect and analyze special project data.
Provide accurate and timely information using discretion and protect confidentiality of information.
Use policy and procedure manuals, and other reference materials, to ensure proper course of action in daily business operations.
Maintain a cost conscious attitude to time usage, materials, and supplies.
Maintain equipment in proper working order.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
