About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Rock and Outdoor Adventure Manager, the Outdoor Shop and Rock Wall Attendant rents and maintains equipment of the Outdoor Shop and helps with climbing wall check-ins, belaying, and rock-climbing classes.

Requirements

  • Recreation Administration, Kinesiology, and Health Services majors are preferred, but not required.
  • Must be enrolled at California State University, Long Beach with at least six units and be in good standing.
  • Experience in customer service and effective organization and communication skills are desirable.
  • Experience in outdoor living.
  • Currently holds CPR, First Aid and AED Certification from a nationally recognized entity or will obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of recreation and fitness activities and the ability to connect well with constituents.
  • Must have above-average work ethic, good judgment, problem solving skills, excellent customer service, and great leadership qualities.
  • Must possess enhanced leadership skills and be able to work in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and problem-solving skills; the ability to work in a changing environment; and familiarity with current technological practices and standards.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, faculty, staff, regulatory agencies, or members of the local community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to university management, student groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse academic community; ability to use independent judgment, critical thinking skills, and analytical skill; ability to maintain professionalism and determine appropriate application of Associated Students Inc. and University policies or guidelines.
  • Understands concepts such as tent building and stove usage.
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs.
  • The employee is regularly required to perform climbing techniques such as belaying, climbing, rescues, and other rock wall related skills.
  • Thay must also talk and take part in interactions with students.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods and to use hands to take notes, operate a computer keyboard, etc.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and to walk to various locations throughout campus.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and welcome all constituents of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center to the Rock Wall and Outdoor Shop with courtesy and develop relationships that ensure member use and satisfaction.
  • Assist with opening and closing of the Outdoor Shop and Rock Wall.
  • Implement and maintain appropriate and approved policies, procedures, regulations, and rules regarding the Rock Wall and Outdoor Adventure programs.
  • Oversee safety and risk management for climbers at the rock wall including inspecting equipment to ensure proper use and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Assess, clean, maintain, and repair equipment as needed.
  • Support the Adventure Trip program through the preparation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assist in the facilitation of Equipment Rental program components. Including the day-to-day operation of the Outdoor Shop, creating an efficient and safe storage system, renting out and checking in outdoor equipment, preparing reserved orders, inspecting checked in equipment, and ensuring outstanding customer service.
  • Assist in the inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Answer phones, and assist with questions and concerns about the Rock and Outdoor Adventure program.
  • Aid in climbing wall operations and programs.
  • Embodies Associated Students Inc. Recreation mission and demonstrates it daily.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Assists in office work (filing, faxing, photocopying, etc.) as needed.
  • Assists with special projects as needed.
