About The Position

The Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for an excited applicant to encourage an appreciation of North Carolina's unique natural resources through paddling and hiking adventures. The primary focus is coordinating the Big Canoes Adventures, which involve two 14-person canoes, gear, and a trailer.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience leading recreation or education programs for schools, youth groups and/or the general public.
• Demonstrated knowledge of public safety with respect to engaging people in the outdoors, including knowledge of water safety, and/or sun safety.
• Demonstrated experience with customer service, which may include promptly responding to email, telephone calls, and/or coordinating schedules.
• Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license within 90 days of employment.
• Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of natural sciences, ecology and the environment, methods used in the development of interpretive and educational programs and themes.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the schedule for the Big Canoes by working with state park staff.
• Maintain all equipment for the Big Canoes including boats, paddles, safety gear, truck, and trailer.
• Travel to parks throughout NC to coordinate and lead guided canoe programs.
• Instruct other state park staff on paddling techniques and safety.
• Teach about state parks during special events, school field trips, etc.
• Lead guided hikes, canoe trips, and paddleboard programs in state parks.
• Assist with developing lesson plans and teaching materials for educational programs and volunteer service projects.
