About The Position

This primary purpose of the Outdoor Recreation Specialist is to enhance the Division’s ability to provide safe and engaging outdoor recreation programs for the public. To achieve this, the position will need to maintain DPR’s existing big canoe program including the supervision of a seasonal outdoor recreation specialist. This position is responsible for scheduling the canoes and ensuring they meet all safety standards. The Outdoor Recreation Specialist will also be responsible for responding to DPR site requests for assistance with outdoor recreation program development and implementation. Outdoor recreation programs include orienteering, paddling, hiking, and so much more! This includes but is not limited to co-facilitating or leading programs, assisting in program planning and research, and providing feedback on program implementation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in a natural science field from an appropriately accredited institution AND two years of experience in the development and presentation of natural science interpretive and educational programs.
  • Must be ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Customer service, which may include promptly responding to email, telephone calls, and/or coordinating schedules.
  • Work is subject to inside/outside environmental conditions such as extreme heat/cold; atmospheric conditions; hazardous conditions and exposure to hazardous oils, fluids, and/or bloodborne pathogens.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Within 12 months of hire date, must have the ability to obtain and maintain: CPR Certification First Aid Certification Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification Wilderness First Aid Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience leading recreation programs for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public safety with respect to engaging people outdoors, including knowledge of water safety, and/or sun safety
  • At least two of the following certifications: American Canoe Association flatwater canoe or kayak instructor certifications, wilderness first responder or first aid certifications, Leave No Trace instructor training, and/or American Mountain Guides Association climbing instructor certifications.
  • Knowledge of natural sciences, ecology and the environment, methods used in the development of interpretive and educational programs and themes

Responsibilities

  • Manage Big Canoe programs.
  • Engage new audiences through introductory instruction.
  • Lead guided hikes, canoe trips, orienteering programs, and other outdoor recreation programs in state parks.
  • Assist with developing and sharing professional development opportunities for DPR staff related to the implementation of recreation programs.
  • Assist and perform pre/post-trip logistics and administrative tasks.
  • Coordinating the delivery of state vehicles, trailers and equipment, which may include driving 6+ hours per day.
  • Supervise seasonal employee.
