About The Position

The Outdoor Program Instructor / Ocean Lifeguard at Camp Surf is responsible for fulfilling the duties of both an Ocean Lifeguard and a Program Instructor during the Overnight Camp program season. As an Ocean Lifeguard, the individual must successfully complete all certification requirements in USLA, CPR (BLS), ASHI Advanced First Aid, and participate in two monthly in-service training sessions focused on physical ability, ocean rescue, and first aid/CPR knowledge. As a Program Instructor, the role involves teaching outdoor and natural history classes, recreational activities, and other camp programming for groups in the overnight camp setting. The instructor is expected to provide supervision and excellent customer service to all participants, enforce safety rules, care for equipment and facilities, and work collaboratively within the camp community. The goal is to ensure a welcoming, genuine, and nurturing program environment for all participants and guests.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, recreation, or related field preferred.
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR-Pro O2 from a recognized organization.
  • Successful completion of on-site USLA Open Water Guarding certification.
  • Successful completion of on-site ASHI Advanced First Aid course.
  • Experience working with youth in Outdoor Education or similar settings preferred.
  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • Physical ability to lead and interact in group activities.
  • Ability to teach and lead activities.
  • Must be able to live on-site during program season.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification or experience in climbing, camping, archery, hiking, biking, surfing, swimming, sailing, kayaking, and scuba diving.
