About The Position

The Outdoor Leader (OL) is responsible for supporting the design and implementation of outdoor recreation and education programs provided by the MRD in conjunction with Generation Wild of the Uncompahgre (GWU) coalition. All programs will further GWU’s mission to aid in delivering diverse, inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities. This position directly organizes, plans, leads, evaluates, and promotes programs, activities, and events. The position works primarily with the MRD Generation Wild team and supports other coalition partners. The OL will assist in some administrative duties in support of the outdoor recreation programming, including communication, marketing, program planning, and evaluation. Assignments are approximately 75% direct programming support of MRD Outdoor programs, 10% administrative support, and 15% external agency outdoor program support.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a relevant major.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience leading outdoor recreational programs and staff.
  • A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • The possession of or ability to obtain CPR/AED and Wilderness First Aid
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate constructively with the public, partners, and staff, fostering collaboration and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Capable of performing job duties and responsibilities autonomously, with minimal supervision, while maintaining a high level of performance and accountability.
  • Ability to supervise and manage part-time volunteers and other employees effectively, ensuring proper execution of tasks and adherence to policies.
  • Skilled in interacting with diverse groups, including parents, youth, and staff, in various situations, demonstrating professionalism, conflict resolution, and customer service.
  • Ability to accurately complete and maintain program reports, ensuring proper documentation and data management.
  • Demonstrates the physical ability to perform essential tasks such as program setup, field preparation, equipment maintenance, and other related duties requiring physical labor.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of program rules and can effectively apply them during the supervision of programs to ensure inclusivity, fairness, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, leads, promotes, and implements recreation programs for program participants.
  • Provides support to MRD GWU programming.
  • Observes, monitors, and evaluates recreation programs and activities to assess quality and gather input from patrons on present and future needs.
  • Advises other staff of changes to policies, procedures, training, methods, and rules.
  • Provides on-site supervision and leadership and monitors recreation programs, activities, and special events.
  • Makes periodic and special reports, accident and incident reports, and maintains records of program operations and results.
  • Maintains inventory, upkeep, and proper maintenance of program equipment and supplies.
  • Implements new program ideas by identifying activities that align with the mission of the recreation district, the needs of district patrons, and Generation Wild of the Uncompahgre.
  • Designs, develops, and leads comprehensive plans for introductory outdoor recreation outings to reach individuals and build relationships with nature.
  • Assists with transportation, administration, and facilitation of activities and programs.
  • Exemplifies environmental stewardship and respect, and provides leadership to program participants, staff, and volunteers in proper Leave No Trace ethics.
  • Attends and participates in professional group and staff meetings.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, and strategies for recreation programs and activities.
  • Recommends resources, staffing, training, equipment, materials, and supplies needed for program implementation.
  • Assists in monitoring program revenues and expenditures.
  • Contributes to current records and reports, identifying programs, participation, program budgets, issues, and highlights.
  • Prepares program descriptions and information and advises on program costs and fees.
  • Markets and promotes activities using flyers, newsletters, social media, websites, activity guides, and other mechanisms.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
