About The Position

The Outdoor Environmental Education Program Director at YMCA of Greater Seattle is responsible for overseeing the development and management of the environmental education programs at Camp Colman in Longbranch, WA. This role includes ensuring program continuity, staff oversight, and collaboration with community organizations. The Director will live year-round at the camp, providing leadership and support to the program staff while working closely with the Executive Director on planning and budgeting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant program area or equivalent education/experience.
  • Two years or more of related experience, with proven experience in training others.
  • One or more years of experience with staff and volunteer supervision, program development, budget management.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and management skills.
  • Experience and knowledge with youth behavior management and child abuse prevention.
  • Intermediate computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to visit sites and community organizations.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in year-round camp programming and operation.
  • Knowledge of American Camping Association guidelines.
  • Specialized training and experience in adventure education, rock climbing, biking, high-ropes operation/repair, kayaking, and/or boating.

Nice To Haves

  • Level 2 Challenge Course Certified or ability to become certified within 6 months.
  • Familiarity with YMCA Resident Camps and the Outdoor Environmental Education (OEE) program.
  • Interest in Outdoor Environmental Education.
  • Experience in BEETLES and SEL curriculum.
  • High level of cultural competency to ensure quality and culturally appropriate programs are delivered to diverse groups.
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical activity, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
  • Currently holds or is able to obtain a red cross lifeguard instructor certification (LGI).

Responsibilities

  • Communicates with school personnel to schedule and confirm reservations.
  • Recruits and hires Outdoor Environmental Educators.
  • Develops staff training plan.
  • Develops program and safety plan for seasonal programs.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations, schools, and agencies related to assigned programs.
  • Develops, produces, and distributes program information necessary to promote assigned programs, in accordance with branch marketing plans.
  • Develops programming and leads weekend family camp.
  • Ensures that safety procedures are followed and that all programs are in compliance with YMCA standards, all relevant regulations, and other applicable standards.
  • Ensures high quality programs through innovative program development evaluations and ongoing training of staff.
  • Ensures upkeep of related facilities and equipment.
