About The Position

Our OSP Inspection Specialist is responsible for the evaluation, development, planning, and construction of new and overbuild long haul routes in the central portion of the US and Canada utilizing a small but effective team of project managers. This role will provide increased inspection and construction management support for LH projects. This typically includes the construction kickoff phase, close out phase and during recovery or expedite phases

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, preferably in Engineering or other related technical field, or equivalent work experience. Business degree/acumen a plus.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience installing, testing or turning up a variety of telecommunications equipment including SONet, TDM, DWDM, and IP.
  • Minimum of five (5) years in the telecommunications industry with outside plant, fiber optics, telecommunication architectures, optical transport equipment, and project management experience.
  • Familiarity with all types of outside plant construction methods and best practices.
  • Familiar with all facets of OSP management, including quoting, construction, production and delivery.
  • Experience supporting large capital projects.
  • Well rounded specialists will be expected to have an understanding of telecommunications standards (i.e. ITU, IEEE, NEBS) as well as possessing strong analytical, technical and customer skills while effectively multi-tasking and if needed doing so in a self reliant manner by performing the following duties personally or though subordinates supervisors and staff members.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as OSHA/Company safety rules, MSDS, MOP’s, process and procedure documents as well as vendor documentation related to equipment owned by the company.
  • Ability to write routine reports, properly fill out documentation such as site surveys and audit reports as well as effectively communicate with customers, management, peers and contractors as well as other members of the organization.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations as well as possessing deductive reasoning skills utilized to improve customer experience and network performance.
  • Able to work well with internal and external peers (Carrier/Vendor peers) on daily tasks and responsibilities towards a common goal, ability to resolve minor conflicts with industry peers, internal peers or customers without management intervention being necessary.
  • Ability to cover various work assignments during a variety of work hours to include day and night time activities.
  • Specialist needs to also be willing to commit to long hours of work when necessary to reach company goals or objectives.
  • Occasional, overnight travel will be required as necessary. This position will require travel as necessary to support the projects assigned (15-50% estimated). This could entail periods of significant travel at critical times for the project.
  • Employee must be approved to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • In person field training of all new and existing Zayo inspectors to facilitate consistent quality, deliverables, expectations and procedures across all LH projects (See Exhibit A).
  • Collaborate with Inspectors, PM’s and Local Ops to maintain and develop best practices, procedures and specs
  • Evaluate field resources and production rates, assist Project Managers in developing recovery or expedite plans as needed.
  • Travel as needed to provide increased inspection and construction management support for LH projects. This typically includes the construction kickoff phase, close out phase and during recovery or expedite phases
  • Act as a subject matter expert, assisting PMs and Inspectors in clearing roadblocks to construction.
  • Attend contractor meetings to ensure Zayo specs and deliverables are understood.
  • Meet with land owners, jurisdictional representatives or utility owners to clear any issues.
  • Perform route drive outs during the Feasibility and Engineering phases to vet constructability concerns.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate project risks.
  • Review daily inspection logs and pictures to ensure inspector expectations are being met.
  • Review project redlines as needed and approve for billing.
  • Assess and validate requirements (routing, fiber counts, hut spacing, etc.) for new route planning to ensure route objectives are clearly defined and meet stakeholder requirements.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the OSP teams within the regions to ensure alignment between long haul projects and local objectives.
