About The Position

The OSP Fiber - Network Maintenance Technician is responsible for network reliance, including outage reporting to fiber cabinets, fiber splitter cabinets, and fiber developments. This role involves maintaining existing network backbone from ROW builds and aerial builds, as well as fixing and repairing anything negatively affecting the network. The position has high travel requirements (70-100%). Essential functions include splicing various types of fiber optic cable in any condition, safely operating a bucket truck and mini excavator, and maintaining live optical/LOS networks. The technician must understand AC to DC rectifying principles, PON and GPON technologies for troubleshooting outages, and backbone, feeder, and AP principles in FTTX practices. Responsibilities also include receiving direction from management, leading a crew during maintenance events, orchestrating controlled outages/repairs, and adhering to DOT regulations. Daily tasks involve completing production reports, marking up maps, tracking work hours, and creating “as-built” maps. The role also requires repairing and maintaining headend electronics and critical infrastructure equipment as needed, and using computer-based programs for equipment activation and verification.

Requirements

  • Must be able to splice any type of fiber optic cable in any type of condition
  • Must be able to run and safely operate a bucket truck
  • Must be able to run and safely operative a mini excavator
  • Must have previous experience maintaining live optical / LOS networks
  • Must understand AC to DC rectifying principles
  • Must understand PON and GPON technologies and be able to troubleshoot outages
  • Must understand backbone, feeder, and AP principals in FTTX practices
  • Must be able to receive direction from management and lead a crew underneath to success during any maintenance events
  • Must be able to orchestrate any controlled outages / repairs with the appropriate channels for a successful controlled outage
  • Must have experience with DOT regulation
  • Ability to communicate in person and by telephone
  • Ability to read and repair from blueprints and/or wire diagrams
  • Ability to complete mechanical tasks such as fiber splicing, reading meters (volt, RF and Fiber), conducting tests and performing troubleshooting measures to achieve plant level requirements
  • Ability to work majority nights shifts
  • Ability to use computer based programs required to support the activation and verification of electronic equipment installs
  • Able to work at varying heights from a bucket truck, as well as ground level in underground vaults
  • Reach, push, pull, hold, grasp and perform fine manipulation task on cable and electronic equipment
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Understand construction prints and splice documents
  • Ability to work within a fast-paced, high-change environment
  • Must pass a drug screening test and a criminal background check
  • Must have time management skills and understand the importance of managing time
  • Must be able to be able to multi-task and handle multiple project standings at one time
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • Experience with fiber tools
  • Driver's License (Required)
  • 70-100% travel required

  • Safely operate and use bucket truck to complete maintenance assignments
  • Use computer based programs required to support the activation and verification of electronic equipment installs
