Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5–10 years of experience in OSP design, with demonstrated expertise in fiber architecture and splicing design.
  • Strong knowledge of GPON, XGS-PON, Active Ethernet, and backbone ring designs.
  • Proficiency in interpreting construction plans, splice records, and network connectivity documents.
  • Familiarity with GIS-based planning platforms (3-GIS, VantagePoint, ArcGIS) and design tools (AutoCAD or MicroStation).
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with ability to coordinate across multiple disciplines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to design accuracy.
  • Ability to manage priorities across multiple projects and clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work with major telecom and broadband clients such as Google Fiber, Crown Castle, Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, Zayo, or municipal broadband entities.
  • Experience developing Make-Ready Engineering (MRE) packages and DOT/railroad submittals.
  • Working knowledge of fiber management systems (OSPInsight, VETRO FiberMap, IQGeo, etc.).
  • Familiarity with BEAD, middle-mile, and intelligent corridor projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee fiber network architecture, including feeder, distribution, and last-mile systems for aerial and underground plant.
  • Define splice locations, cabinet placements, and cable routing for optimal network performance and constructability.
  • Create and maintain high-level and detailed design plans, including FTTx, middle-mile, and backbone systems.
  • Lead coordination between engineering, fielding, and CAD teams, ensuring all design elements translate seamlessly from concept to construction.
  • Ensure design compliance with client standards (e.g., Google Fiber, Crown Castle, Zayo, AT&T, Comcast) and relevant DOT/NESC requirements.
  • Develop detailed splicing plans, fiber assignment matrices, and connectivity diagrams to support end-to-end system documentation.
  • Define fiber counts, slack loop placement, and reserve strategies across network segments.
  • Oversee creation of splice schematics and as-built updates, coordinating with construction teams to reflect real-world conditions.
  • Review splice enclosure and panel configurations for accuracy and consistency with design intent.
  • Support troubleshooting and re-route designs when field or as-built conditions differ from plan.
  • Provide technical direction and QA/QC review of all OSP design packages before client submittal.
  • Mentor and guide design technicians and junior designers in layout consistency, splicing standards, and construction feasibility.
  • Support project managers and engineers in BOM preparation, permitting coordination, and construction sequencing.
  • Lead periodic design review meetings and interface with field teams for walkouts, redline verification, and final acceptance.
  • Assist with scope development, cost estimating, and client coordination for new or modified design work.
