About The Position

Using hand tools and specialized equipment, the technician connects and reorganizes underground copper and fiber optic cables within buildings. They employ test devices to find cable faults, conduct completion tests, and pinpoint the exact location of copper and fiber cables. The role also involves repairing and maintaining telephone systems. Additionally, they are responsible for installing and servicing both wireless and wired broadband equipment at customer sites. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned. Work safely and conscientiously in all environments, adhering to proper safety practices and protocols. Load and secure necessary tools, materials, and equipment onto company vehicles and travel to designated work locations. Connect, install, and rearrange buried copper and fiber optic cable systems in buildings using appropriate hand tools and specialized equipment. Follow Rural Utilities Service (R.U.S.) guidelines for installation, maintenance, and service delivery to customers. Use test equipment to locate cable faults, conduct cable completion tests, and accurately identify the location of copper and fiber cables. Work in a variety of field conditions including inside buildings, trenches, splice pits, cable vaults, and handholes. Operate power equipment such as pumps, air compressors, and portable generators as needed. Perform routine cleaning, inspection, and preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment to ensure proper operation. Maintain accuracy and completeness in all reporting tasks, including service documentation and records. Proficiently splice fiber optic and copper cables and operate related test equipment in accordance with R.U.S. standards. Conduct oneself professionally to promote a positive work atmosphere and maintain effective communication with customers, clients, coworkers, and supervisors. Perform wireless site surveys for internal or external wireless LANs. Install and run cables including CAT5, CAT6, Fiber, and RG6. Terminate, test, and validate data cables such as CAT5 and CAT6 using industry-standard tools and procedures. Safely handle heavy lifting of tools, ladders, materials, and supplies as required. Climb ladders and work at heights exceeding 20 feet when necessary. Comply with all OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and departmental standards as directed by the Supervisor. Accurately document service orders with photos and detailed notes, clearly reflecting the work completed during each job. Support warehouse operations including stocking, material transfers, inventory management, and charging materials to appropriate jobs. Conduct vehicle safety inspections when instructed and properly log all required documentation for fleet records. Use the company credit card responsibly and submit monthly expense statements accurately and on time.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and insurable record.
  • Must pass pre-employment screen, physical and background checks.
  • Must be able to work required overtime, emergency call-out, weekends and out of town assignments.
  • Must be able to participate in emergency “stand-by” rotation, as assigned.
  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete training courses.
  • Must be able to install and maintain station equipment at customer locations such as Key systems, DSL equipment, Routers, extenders, etc.
  • Must be able to understand and work with cable counts and color codes.
  • Must be able to read and understand staking sheets and schematics.
  • Must be able to perform maintenance on existing copper and fiber optic plant.
  • Must communicate effectively with vendors, contractors, and employees.
  • Computer background with technical network training or experience necessary.
  • Must be able to understand and use test equipment and hand tools used for installation and maintenance of Copper and Fiber cable such as a Fusion Splicer, OTDR, Dynatel Circuit Loop Analyzer, light source, power meter, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior working experience in similar function for an ISP/WISP desired.
  • Understanding of wireless switch/bridge technologies.
  • Working Knowledge of wireless technology theories such as SNR, fade margin, QAM, dB.
  • Experience running cables such as CAT5, Fiber, and RF.
  • Understanding of new technologies such 802.11i, 802.16(a).
  • Previous installation experience highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic and networking
  • Must be able to work alone and be self-motivated with a desire to achieve excellence.
  • Must have telephone plant experience and previews installation highly preferred.
  • Understanding of new technologies such 802.11i, 802.16(a).
