About The Position

The Department of Rehabilitation seeks an experienced laboratory coordinator with a broad spectrum of skills and experience to manage laboratory operations, new technology development, device fabrication, and fabrication instruction in the inaugural Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics (MSOP) program. The position is a full-time staff position and reports to the director of the Orthotics and Prosthetics program. The MSOP program anticipates admission of its first cohort in the Spring of 2025. The successful candidate is expected to participate as a full member of the department with all relevant duties, responsibilities, and benefits. The staff member is expected to be responsible for the organization, coordination, supervision, and some instruction of laboratory operations in the MSOP program. Requirements

  • Must be skilled at operating machinery including power tools, mills, lathes, and welders while maintaining a high level of hand-eye coordination.

  • Willing to pursue certification as an Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics, Inc.
  • Possess awareness of digital shape capture and additive manufacturing (3-0 printing) methods.
  • Ability to fabricate, fit, maintain, and repair artificial limbs, carbon, silicone, plastic appliances, and other prosthetic devices, according to Prosthetist specifications.
  • Ability to maintain and repair prosthetic devices under the guidance of the prosthetic staff and/or the lab manager.
  • Ability to follow instructions from the Prosthetist to determine type of prosthesis to be fabricated and the materials and tools required.
  • Ability to lay out and mark dimensions of parts using appropriate measuring instruments and templates.
  • Ability to saw, carve, cut, and grind wood, plastic, metal, or fabric to fabricate parts, using appropriate tools.
  • Ability to drill and tap holes for rivets and screws using drill press.
  • Ability to glue, weld, bolt, sew, and rivet parts together to form prostheses.
  • Ability to test prostheses for freedom of movement, alignment of parts, and mechanical stability, using all appropriate tools.
  • Ability to fabricate cosmetic covers.
  • Ability to apply silicone skin covers to the prosthesis.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of technical experience working in an Orthotics and/or Prosthetics laboratory.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics, Inc. OR commensurate experience.
  • Working knowledge and skills in digital shape capture and additive manufacturing methods
  • Extensive technical design and fabrication experience in Orthotics and Prosthetics.
  • An associate degree (or higher degree) or strong desire to pursue an associate degree (or higher degree).
  • Management/supervision experience in an active Orthotic and Prosthetic fabrication laboratory.
  • Mentoring/teaching experience in fabrication methods of orthoses, prostheses and footwear.
