About The Position

Provides technical support and expertise in the fabrication of orthotic and prosthetic devices in collaboration with orthotic and prosthetic clinical staff. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Requirements

  • Experience in entry level in carpentry, construction, mechanics, or similar field where hand skills and tool use are required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • No professional certifications required
  • Proficient in using hand and power tools
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally and effectively with colleagues
  • Effective use of computer to access clinical and production information related to device fabrication
  • Able to work independently once each skill set has been signed off on
  • Able to achieve a pass score of 80% on department anatomy test within the first 6 months of employment
  • Working knowledge of Windows based outlook, excel and word

Responsibilities

  • Creates a clinically accurate foundation for custom orthotic/prosthetic device design by preparing patient models according to department procedures and begins to learn cast modification principles.
  • Interprets clinical documentation accurately regarding device fabrication/design specifics and ensures fabrication stages are consistent with clinical documentation for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrates competency in working with various industrial grade machines, e.g., sewing machine, bandsaw, and router.
  • Initiates cast rectification, whether manually or digitally under the guidance of a mentor.
  • Develops opportunities to advance fabrication skills regarding device complexity and seeks input from senior technicians.
  • Demonstrates effective time management skills by maximizing efficiency while reducing production errors.
  • Completes assigned projects accurately in their entirety, interpreting clinical documentation regarding design specifics so that outcomes are achieved. Seeks the input from a mentor when tasks are beyond skillsets.
  • Organizes projects and ensures components/materials are available.
  • Begins to assume individual project management under supervision from senior staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for lab and equipment maintenance.
  • Independently vacuum forms all ankle-foot orthosis variations according to work order.
  • Independently trims and finishes all ankle-foot orthosis designs according to department procedure/standards and ensures finished work matches work order.
  • Independently fabricates various foot orthotic designs according to work order.
  • Initiates opportunities to observe/assist with fabrication of more advanced orthoses, e.g., knee ankle foot orthoses.
  • Independently vacuum forms and prepares below knee test sockets.
  • Independently performs socket and finish laminations with acrylic, polyester, and silicone for all below-knee variations.
  • Transfers, finishes, and assembles endo-and exo-skeletal below-knee prostheses with assistance as needed from senior technician or supervisor.
  • Initiates opportunities to observe/assist with fabrication of more advanced prostheses, e.g., above-knee and upper-extremity variations.
