Job Summary Summary Under the supervision, provides specialized support in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of orthopedic conditions. Assists in the application of casts, braces, splints, and other orthopedic devices, and may also assist in surgical procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • 2-3 years related patient care experience required
  • 0-1 year experience in orthopedics preferred
  • General knowledge of standard orthopedic procedures and practices.
  • Working knowledge of orthopedic devices and appliances and proper fitting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology pertaining to orthopedics use.
  • Communicate effectively when instructing patients in the use and care of orthopedic devices and appliances.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
  • Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and apply traction in accordance with standard procedures and instructions.
  • Assist with the application of casts, braces, and prostheses. Requisition, store, and dispense supplies as directed.
  • Inspect and maintain orthopedic equipment.
  • Instruct selected patients in cast care, simple exercises, and crutch or cane use. Apply sterile and non-sterile dressings.
  • Make splints, slings and foot pieces.
  • May make rounds with doctors of all orthopedic patients and carry out instructions.
  • Cut and fashion devices from metal, plastic, leather and wood using equipment and hand tools.
