About The Position

Your job is more than a job. The Certified Orthopedic Technician is a medically trained member of the staff who is responsible for assisting orthopedic physicians with the application of nonsurgical therapeutics to designated orthopedic patients. Under general supervision, provides functional guidance to assigned staff by training new employees, adjusting work schedules, directing workflows, resolving non-routine problems, assisting supervisor in various additional administrative matters such as developing and revising departmental procedures.

Requirements

  • Combination of appropriate education and work experience is required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 4 years of experience in hospital/clinic-direct care of orthopedic patient(s).
  • Certified Orthopedic Tech through the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
  • Expert knowledge of the proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing change, removal of sutures, staples and in setting up surgical fields and draping in the operating room
  • Advanced knowledge of theory and application of skin, skeletal and manual tractions.
  • Possess the ability to deal with staff, physicians, visitors, vendors, patients, and the general public in a tactful, diplomatic and pleasant manner.
  • Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based on advanced understanding of anatomical structures and their relationships with one another.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and retain confidentiality.
  • Capable of clear and timely written/verbal communication with peers, professional staff, physicians and management.

Responsibilities

  • Applies, adjusts, and removes casts, splints and traction under direct supervision. Observes patients for any breaks in skin integrity and reports these to the nurse, physician, or physician assistant.
  • Serves as a resource to nursing personnel when consulted concerning various types of traction, modifications, and complications of plaster casts, causes, and treatments. Provides patients with written information regarding cast care.
  • Cleans all equipment using proper techniques. Orders supplies and maintains supply levels. Maintains the cast room in a clean and orderly condition. Appropriately charges for supplies and equipment.
  • May assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room or procedural room, if well-trained in sterilization and infection protocols, when needed. Trains & orients junior team members and newly hired orthopedic technicians.
