Orthopedic/Orthopedic Trauma Surgical Coordinator

About the position

The position is for a full-time role at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in the Surgery Room, requiring 40 hours of work per week, Monday through Friday, with on-call duties. The role involves facilitating the development of critical thinking skills in nursing personnel, acting as a clinical resource to OR staff, and developing staff through coaching and mentoring. Responsibilities include participating in the orientation of new staff, assuming responsibility for direct patient care, evaluating OR turnover times, providing feedback for team member performance reviews, and coordinating the flow of surgical cases within the operating room. The Service Leader aspect of the role involves collaboration with various managers regarding physician needs and equipment usage, coordinating schedules with vendors, and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. The position also includes quality improvement duties, fiscal responsibility, and participation in shared governance and departmental meetings.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates the development of critical thinking skills in nursing personnel.
• Acts as a clinical resource to OR staff and other hospital departments.
• Develops staff by coaching, mentoring, and role modeling.
• Participates in orientation of new staff members and provides feedback to the Professional Nurse Educator.
• Assumes responsibility for direct patient care.
• Evaluates OR turnover times and assists with meeting designated turnover time targets.
• Provides feedback for team member performance reviews to managers.
• Coordinates the flow of surgical cases within the operating room.
• Collaborates with the OR Manager, Materials Manager, and SPD Manager regarding physician needs, equipment usage, and supply requests.
• Coordinates schedule with appropriate vendors, representatives, proctoring physicians, and observers.
• Coordinates and evaluates new supplies/equipment and submits requests when needed.
• Reviews inventory on specialized supply carts and communicates with supply liaison and managers.
• Assumes responsibility for administrative call and communicates with physicians on approved products.
• Maintains preference cards and participates in performance improvement projects.
• Monitors compliance with legal, safety, and health regulations.
• Reports safety events and near misses.
• Maintains a working knowledge of the department expense budget.
• Follows Advocate's contracts and preferred vendor lists.
• Provides justification and quotations for purchase requests.

Requirements

• Graduate from an approved school of nursing.
• 2 years clinical experience in area specialty (OR).
• 1 year management experience.
• Current licensure in State of Illinois.
• CPR certification.
• Active member of a professional organization.
