About The Position

Orthopedic Physicians Alaska seeks a highly skilled, dedicated and professional Orthopedic Casting Technician to join our rapidly growing and dynamic team. In a collaborative environment and working under the guidance of physicians, orthopedic technicians teach patients to use walking aids such as canes and crutches, and fit and adjust equipment as necessary. Orthopedic technicians apply and remove plaster and synthetic casts and inform patients about the risks of treatment. Under the guidance of surgeons, orthopedic technicians fabricate splints and manage other medical technology, including braces and prosthetic limbs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).
  • Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures.
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical practice.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and of orthopedic supplies.
  • Skill in the area of tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions.
  • Ability to effectively share information with patients and families.
  • Skilled in the application of casting, splinting, and orthopedic appliances.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.
  • Ability to project a pleasant and professional image.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical Assistant or orthopedic technology certificate or related associate's degree.

Responsibilities

  • Performs splinting, casting, and application of traction, braces and other devices under the direction of an orthopedic physician or physician assistant.
  • Performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an orthopedic technologist and specific training, assisting orthopedic physician with dressing changes, suture and pin removal, incision and drainage, reducing fractures, etc.
  • Educate patients and staff regarding proper care and use of appliances.
  • Document the care administered.
  • Monitor and order all casting, clinical, DME, and patient supplies including instruments.
  • Clean and autoclave instruments.
  • Orient and provide on-the-job training in casting and splinting to resident physicians and staff.
