About The Position

The Orbital Debris Space Traffic Classification and Analysis Internship is a temporary role within NASA's Science and Exploration Division, specifically with the JETS II program. The intern will support the analysis and classification of orbital debris, contributing to NASA's efforts to monitor and predict space debris growth and distribution. This position involves working with data from the Space Surveillance Network and other resources to enhance the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office's space traffic database and resolve data discrepancies.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university
  • Completed at least 45 credit hours
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA
  • Experience in using MS Excel and/or SQL databasing tools
  • Self-motivated, team player with adaptability to a dynamic environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prepare written documents and verbally present at meetings
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • Completed at least 60 college credit hours
  • Must be a student enrolled in an ABET accredited science, engineering or engineering technology degree program
  • Experience in building and adding to databases, such as SQL/SQLite
  • Experience in writing software code and executing code in a command-line environment
  • Experience in developing and running Python code
  • Experience in Linux BASH or Windows PowerShell command-line environments

Responsibilities

  • Focus on improving the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office (ODPO) space traffic database
  • Support efforts to resolve data discrepancies and inconsistencies in space traffic data
  • Facilitate unique identifications of satellites using class indices and other identifiers
  • Develop new classifications for spacecraft and rocket body construction
  • Perform analysis of satellite orbital decay data
  • Analyze constellation space traffic to deduce mission model parameters
  • Work closely with JETS-II Orbital Debris Research & Science Operations colleagues and NASA ODPO customers
  • Present work products to customers and counterparts
  • Support and participate in technical meetings
  • Perform other duties as required
