About The Position

The OR RN Pre-Op at Morgan Medical Center plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and comfort of patients undergoing surgical procedures. This position involves comprehensive preoperative assessment, preparation, and education of patients to optimize surgical outcomes. If needed, postoperatively, the nurse monitors patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), managing pain, vital signs, and potential complications to facilitate smooth recovery. The role requires close collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. Ultimately, the nurse contributes to efficient surgical workflow and enhances patient satisfaction through expert clinical practice and compassionate support.

Requirements

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Prior experience or clinical knowledge in perioperative nursing, including preoperative and postoperative care.
  • Strong understanding of surgical procedures, anesthesia effects, and patient monitoring standards.
  • Ability to work part-time day shifts as required by the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a hospital surgical setting, particularly in pre-op units.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems used in perioperative care.
  • Demonstrated skills in interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough preoperative assessments including reviewing medical history, medications, and allergies to prepare patients for surgery.
  • Provide patient education regarding surgical procedures, anesthesia, and postoperative care to alleviate anxiety and promote understanding.
  • Monitor patients closely in the PACU, assessing vital signs, level of consciousness, pain, and potential complications following anesthesia.
  • Administer medications and interventions as prescribed to manage pain, nausea, and other postoperative symptoms.
  • Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure seamless patient transitions between pre-op, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
  • Document all nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely in the medical record.
  • Maintain a safe, sterile, and organized environment in both preoperative and PACU settings in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
