Overview Children’s Mercy is one of only 30 locations in the nation to be verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center. This verification means Children's Mercy meets the highest standards for safety and outcomes determined by the American College of Surgeons. Our surgical care is designed to manage routine to highly complex illnesses. We also have experts in every pediatric specialty ready to go at all times to provide comprehensive care for kids. We have 18 operating rooms at our downtown Adele Hall campus. As a level-one trauma center, our procedures encompass a wide range of acuity in the following surgical sub-specialties: General surgery, Neuro surgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Oral surgery, Orthopedics, Plastic surgery, Urology, GYN, and Dermatology. Patients range in age from neonates to young adults with a 1:1 nurse to patient ratio. The operating room department is complimented by instrument processing specialists, orderlies and administrative assistants. We also work side by side with attending physicians, fellows, residents, and our anesthesia team to provide extraordinary care for our pediatric surgical patients daily. Critical care registered nurses provide illness management and health promotion for patients and families who require intensive care. Critical care registered staff nurses utilize the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age appropriate nursing care for their assigned patients in the intensive care areas of the hospital. The OR RNFA assists the surgeon with the operative procedure. When not assigned as a Registered Nurse First Assistant, assumes a perioperative staff nurse role. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing and 3-5 years experience perioperative nursing (scrub and circulating)
  • Other Completion of RNFA program that meets criteria set out in the “AORN Standards for RN First Assistant Education Programs” According to AORN RN First Assistant Guide to Practice (Second Edition). The RNFA scope of practice requires a distinct skill set that includes the intraoperative nursing behaviors of the following: 1.Handling tissue; 2.Providing exposure; 3.Using instruments; 4.Suturing-one and two hand tying; 5.Providing hemostasis. The admission requirements to enter an RNFA program vary widely. Many RNFA educational programs require nurses to be: 1.Assessed for perioperative nursing competencies and skill sets, including competency in scrubbing, prepping and draping; 2.Complete course prerequisites appropriate to the nurse’s perioperative experience and/or demonstrated competencies; 3.Produce proof of completion of an introductory course for perioperative nursing; and/or 4.Provide a recommendation from a board-certified surgeon and nursing supervisor.

  • One of the following: Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
  • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO
  • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire
  • CNOR Certification Required Upon Hire

Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon, assists with the operative procedure. Does not function concurrently as a scrub nurse.
  • Performs other perioperative staff nurse functions when not assisting in the Operating Room.
  • Participates in performance improvement and professional development activities.
