The Certified Surgical Technologist participates as a member of the surgical team under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Certified Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room will be a graduate of an accredited school for surgical technologists and must be certified as a surgical technologist in the state of Louisiana. Previous experience preferred.

  • Acts as a scrub nurse during the operative procedure.
  • Prepares for the surgical procedure by reviewing physician pick list and preference cards.
  • Sets up surgical equipment required for the procedure.
  • Selects appropriate sterile supplies as listed on the physician profile.
  • Understands and applies principles of sterilization when operating auto clave.
  • Sets up table, instruments and supplies at the appropriate time according to established protocol.
  • Counts instruments, sponges and needles with the circulating nurse.
  • Assists with maintenance of accurate pick list and preference cards.
  • Understands and applies principles of aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates integrity in aseptic technique.
  • Scrubs, dons gown and gloves in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains the sterile field by monitoring the sterility of all supplies used during the operative procedure.
  • Performs pre-op skin prep using sterile technique.
  • Complies with AORN standards on confinement and containment.
  • Assesses and anticipates the surgeon's needs for exposure and selects appropriate method.
  • Assists in preparation, positioning and draping of patient and operative area according to need.
  • Demonstrates methods of tissue handling that promote tissue preservation and wound healing.
  • Provides appropriate retraction with protection of anatomical structures.
  • Utilizes appropriate suctioning techniques to maintain a dry field.
  • Provides adequate exposure by appropriate sponging techniques.
  • Utilizes sponges/laps appropriately for pressure and hemostasis.
  • Operates tables, lights, suction equipment, ESU and other diagnostic equipment safely and effectively.
  • Passes instruments during surgery, recognizing and interpreting the immediate situation to anticipate surgeon needs.
  • Prepares and manages medications and solutions at the operative field.
  • Assists in closing of body planes and skin.
  • Assists in application of casts and splints.
  • Counts instruments, sponges, etc. as established by policy when relieved during a case.
  • Prepares specimens as directed by the surgeon and according to policy for delivery to the lab.
  • Removes used instruments and supplies from the OR.
  • Disposes of hazardous items per established protocols.
  • Cleans instruments and returns to Sterile Processing per established protocols.
  • Communicates any change regarding physician preferences to the service specific team leader.
  • Reports any stated physician concerns to Unit Coordinator.
  • Practices and understands universal precautions in the Receiving of contaminated equipment in the decontamination area of the department.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of all decontaminating and sterilization equipment.
  • Maintains proper workflow patterns.
  • Properly inspects, assembles, wraps/containerizes and processes all instruments/equipment.
  • Monitors and documents processing equipment functions.
  • Has expanded knowledge of all surgical instrumentation.
  • Responsible for maintaining all general and medical supplies in Sterile Services Department.
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate sterile stock levels in OR.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment by keeping work areas clean and neat at all times.
  • Monitors the sterility of all supplies in Sterile Services and in the OR.
  • Assists in the care and handling of professional supplies.
  • Monitors all sterilization equipment in the operating room.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of OSHA and AAMI standards with regards to the safe use of ethylene oxide, peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide plasma, and the handling of bio-hazardous waste.
  • Actively participates in the orientation of new employees.
  • Participates intra-departmentally in the Quality Improvement process.
  • Precepts Operating Room personnel in the learning of instrumentation identification.
  • Precepts Operating Room personnel in the teaching of decontamination with sterilization procedures.
  • Maintains a safe environment by following established OR protocols.
  • Removes equipment not working properly from the immediate work environment and reports to coordinator and Biomed.
  • Reports any non-functioning supplies during a procedure to Risk Management.
  • Is knowledgeable of all hospital safety related codes and performs duties in drills and actual emergencies.
  • Maintains clear pathways.
  • Reports unsafe conditions and incidents.
  • Extends courtesy and consideration for others in interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrates professional manner in work setting.
  • Accepts and acts upon constructive criticism to upgrade abilities.

  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Follows North Oaks Health System's Compliance Program and Federal and State Regulatory guidelines.
  • Is able to demonstrate competency in age specific criteria as applicable to job scope.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner and follows North Oaks Health System's safety policies and procedures.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist required.
  • Graduate of an accredited school for surgical technologists.
  • Must be certified as a surgical technologist in the state of Louisiana.
  • Previous experience preferred.
  • Experience as a Sterile Technician is preferred.
