About The Position

An Optometry Technician in a medical practice supports optometrists in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease by performing advanced pre-testing, assisting during examinations, and ensuring accurate clinical documentation. This role emphasizes patient care, clinical precision, technical skills, administrative, billing responsibilities and teamwork in a fast-paced healthcare environment focused on high patient volume, ocular disease management, and close collaboration with optometrists and healthcare staff. Required Vaccines and Test: Influenza, Tdap, Hep B, MMR, Varicella, TB test, and Negative Drug Test results. Additional Vaccines may be required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Strong clinical documentation and computer skills
  • Excellent patient communication and professionalism
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced medical environment

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a medical optometry or ophthalmology setting preferred
  • Knowledge of ocular disease terminology and testing procedures
  • Certification (CPOT, CPO, or equivalent) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Obtain detailed medical and ocular histories, including medications and systemic conditions
  • Perform clinical pre-testing: visual acuity, refraction assistance, tonometry, pachymetry, OCT, fundus photography, visual field testing, and anterior segment imaging
  • Prepare patients for comprehensive and medical eye exams
  • Assist optometrists during exams and minor in-office procedures
  • Accurately document findings in electronic health records (EHR)
  • Educate patients on ocular conditions, treatment plans, and prescribed medications
  • Assist with contact lens evaluations when medically indicated
  • Maintain, clean, and calibrate diagnostic equipment
  • Follow HIPAA, infection control, and clinical safety protocols
  • Coordinate referrals, testing, and follow-up care as directed by the provider
  • Verify and document patient vision insurance eligibility, benefits, coverage limitations, and prior authorization requirements for frames, lenses, and optical add-ons.
  • Clearly explain insurance benefits, patient financial responsibility, copays, deductibles, and non-covered services prior to dispensing eyewear.
  • Accurately enter charges for frames, lenses, and related optical services into the practice management/EHR system.
  • Collect patient payments at the time of service in accordance with organizational financial policies.
  • Ensure proper documentation to support billing and payer compliance.
  • Coordinate with the billing department to resolve claim denials, payment discrepancies, and patient balance questions related to optical services.
