About The Position

The Mission Neighborhood Health Center (MNHC) is a non-profit, multi-site community health organization offering comprehensive health services in the Mission and Excelsior Districts of San Francisco. The center offers primary health care services, adult medicine, pediatrics, family planning, OB/GYN, HIV and homeless services. We advocate for health equity and deliver innovative, high-quality services responsive to the neighborhoods and diverse communities we serve. We are currently looking for an Optometrist to join our team​​​​​​. This position reports to the Chief Medical Officer, and is an on-call, as-needed, exempt role with an hourly rate of $63.95 to $70.37. Primary Objective: The Optometrist will perform routine vision and medical examinations using independent professional judgment in the practice of optometry within the scope of the laws of the state of California, the rules and regulations of the California Board of Optometry and the policies of MNHC.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of optometry, Doctor of Optometry degree.
  • Valid California Optometry license required.
  • Cultural competency working with diverse/low-income communities, especially Spanish-speaking immigrant communities.
  • Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents (T.P.A.) required.
  • Must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI) or obtain an NPI prior to employment or start date.
  • Knowledge of modern optometric methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to perform eye examinations on children and adults.
  • Ability to write concisely and legibly; communicate effectively; and relate congenially to patients and staff
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with patient records and personal information

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Examines eyes, using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose ocular diseases and other ocular abnormalities. These include conducting & documenting history, measuring refractive error, conducting visual & confrontational fields, pupil testing, ocular mobility testing, slit lamp examination, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, tear function testing, etc.
  • Prescribes eyeglasses and other treatment as needed
  • Interprets data from clinical exams, analyze test results and develop a treatment plan.
  • Performs other related duties such as completing school forms, Department of Motor Vehicle, and other like documents.
  • Patient education regarding exam and findings
  • Practices to the extent of optometry scope and refers to ophthalmology as needed
