About The Position

This position is an on-call on an as needed basis. The Work: The Optometrist will provide quality eye care and emergency treatment to patients. The primary focus will be to examine eyes and visual system, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions. The optometrist will collaborate with other providers and support staff. This position performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) from accredited institution
  • Board Certification by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.
  • Graduation from an approved school of optometry.
  • Two (2) years of experience in Optometry, preferably in geriatric care.
  • The following documents are required for credentialing the Optometrist Current License in Washington, DC Certification Professional School attended (to include diplomas) Declaration of Health Relevant Training or Experience Initial Application for Clinic Privileges Delineation of Privileges Statement of Application Privacy Act Statement Curriculum Vitae CPR Certification (BLS) Continuing Education Certificates National Criminal Background Check (DC, MD, VA, and any additional states worked/lived in the last seven (7) years) Drug Screening PPD and Vaccination Record (Influenza and COVID-19) Td/TdaP (up to date)
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

  • Ability to respond effectively to customers with a sense of urgency.
  • Proficient in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat, etc.

  • Must be a Self-starter, that can work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and record Optometry treatment and histories.
  • Uses both routine and advanced Optometric procedures and techniques in the performance of ocular and visual evaluations to ascertain the presence or absence of defects or visual anomalies which can be corrected, remedied, or relieved by use of lenses, prisms, orthoptics, contact lenses, subnormal vision aids, or other ophthalmic devices.
  • Performs external and internal examination of the eyes and refers suspected and detected pathology to appropriate medical specialist through consultation.
  • Determines refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism and prescribes appropriate treatment for these and other visual problems.
  • Ascertains through clinical tests, range of vision and ability and ease with which eyes maintain clear, comfortable, binocular vision at any distance of fixation.
  • Evaluates as to the need for, and suitability of correction with telescopic or near point magnifying devices.
  • Prescribes appropriate lenses to correct various errors of refraction.
  • Prescribes telescopic or other subnormal vision aids as needed, in those cases characterized by reduced corrected visual acuity.
  • Prescribes, fits and adjusts contact lenses for the correction of eye problems.
  • Prescribes and administers orthoptics or visual training in those instances where such procedures are indicated.
  • Prescribe appropriate drug therapy and make appropriate adjustments as needed.
  • Refers for medical treatment or surgery those cases characterized by disease or injury.
  • Participates in Care Planning for Residents upon request of other medical staff, Serves as consultant to and/or liaison with physicians, ophthalmologists and other professionals concerning ocular or visual manifestations of systemic disease or medication, or problems that may arise during the treatment of patients with ocular pathology.
  • As the need arises, acts as the initial point of contact in the evaluation of residents requiring emergency eye care, on a walk-in or referral basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
