About The Position

The Optometrist position at California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC) involves examining eyes and correcting defects using lenses, prisms, or eye exercises without medical or surgical techniques. Responsibilities include determining the accommodative and refractive states of the eye, measuring vision powers, prescribing and adjusting glasses, instructing ancillary medical staff, maintaining records, and supervising the conduct of inmates. The role also requires maintaining security and inspecting premises for contraband. This position is part-time, working 20 hours per week, and is located in Lancaster, CA.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid license to practice optometry in the State of California.
• Two years of experience in the practice of optometry.

Responsibilities

• Examine eyes and correct defects using lenses, prisms, or eye exercises.
• Determine the accommodative and refractive states of the eye.
• Measure the powers of vision and adapt lenses for aiding vision.
• Use retinoscope, ophthalmometer, phoropter, Snellen chart, and other aids for vision measurement.
• Prescribe, fit, adjust, and repair glasses.
• Instruct ancillary medical staff in techniques and methods.
• Keep records, prepare reports, and dictate correspondence.
• Maintain order and supervise the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections.
• Prevent escapes and injury by inmates to themselves, others, or property.
• Maintain security of working areas and work materials.
• Inspect premises and search inmates for contraband.
