About The Position

The goal of an Optometric Technician is to assist the Optometrist during eye examinations. Technicians perform basic testing for clients and communicate patient concerns to the Optometrist.

Requirements

  • 2+ years work experience in a clinical healthcare setting preferred.
  • Degree or certification in medical assisting desired.
  • Must be able to traverse throughout the clinic at least 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to move or transport items weighing up to 20 pounds around the office.
  • Must be able to move around inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, supplies, etc.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a fax machine, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, and/or phone.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with coworkers, Supervisors, and patients via digital, verbal, and written mediums.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic testing.
  • Screen patients for colorblindness, test peripheral vision, and record intraocular pressure and visual acuity.
  • Calibrate and disinfect equipment before every new patient encounter.
  • Instruct patients on how to properly insert and remove contact lenses.
  • Efficiently perform special testing, such as Visual Field exams, OCT exams, S-Map exams, specialized retinal exam screenings, glaucoma testing, or any other testing needed.
  • Provide detailed record of patient health information, such as chief complaints, testing findings, medical/surgical/family/personal health histories, and other details with clarity and accuracy.
  • Report testing results to clinicians before they begin their examinations.
  • Consistently maintain stock of diagnostic contact lenses.
  • Act as a scribe when requested.
  • Inform patients of the testing options that are available to them as well as their clinician's recommendations for treatment, when relevant.
  • Ensure patients feel comfortable, informed, and welcomed during their visit.
  • Advise patients on pertinent eye diseases and proper care of eye health.
  • Perform any additional tasks assigned by Management or the Practice Owners.
