This role is part of Alcon's Engineering function, a team focused on dedicated to improving quality, processes, products, packaging, and materials—focuses on designing, modeling, analyzing, and testing optical, electro‑optical, and opto‑mechanical systems such as sensors, lasers, fiber‑optics, and telecommunications components. The position involves researching physical and geometric optics, lasers, and broadband sources; developing specifications, tolerances, simulations, and test procedures; and using design‑to‑cost and Six Sigma methods to ensure requirements are met. You will also support studies of light behavior, material interactions, and imaging performance, assist in simulations, validate prototypes, and optimize optical components.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +10 yrs; Assoc.+6 yrs; M.S.+0 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 2 Years of Relevant Experience

Nice To Haves

  • Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or Physics background preferred
  • Expert level CAD experience (CREO preferred)
  • Analytical skills, including data analysis using tools such as MATLAB and Minitab
  • Optical design (ZEMAX preferred)
  • Knowledge of ISO, FDA, MDD and regulations applicable to the design and development of medical device/science/technology
  • Optical fabrication and optical metrology instrumentation, such as imaging applications, interferometers, surface profiling, etc.
  • Software development experience desired but not required
  • FEA experience desired but not required
  • PLM experience desired but not required

Responsibilities

  • Deliver ophthalmic designs and ancillary deliverables using state-of-the-art mechanical and optical design systems and methods
  • Effective collaboration with project leads, functional managers, cross-franchise SMEs, clinicians and MTO to support R&D targets and project milestones
  • Collaborates with peers, internal customers and 3rd party suppliers to define design specifications and tolerances
  • Ability to advance innovative designs from research through product launch
  • Internal interaction requires interpretation of complex information; external interaction mainly requires exchange of information. Audience may be outside own area and unfamiliar with the technology
  • Applies engineering principles to the research and development of medical device/science/technology and/or provide engineering expertise to support development projects
  • Requires awareness of the workings of the business beyond own team and some familiarity with the external environment as it affects own part of the organization
