About the position

The Optician II at Eskenazi Health is responsible for providing comprehensive optical services to patients, including measuring pupillary distance, advising on frame selection, dispensing eyewear, and ensuring proper fit. This role emphasizes patient care and support, particularly for the vulnerable population of Marion County, while also managing various administrative and financial tasks related to optical services.

Responsibilities

  • Measures the pupillary distance of patients.
  • Advises patients on selection of frames, proper fit, and types of lenses.
  • Prices lenses and frames, and all items sold in the Optical Shop.
  • Dispenses eyewear, ensuring proper fit, making repairs to glasses as required.
  • Collects payments from patients for services or arranges alternative payment methods.
  • Notifies patients on arrival of glasses for pick-up.
  • Purchases all stock/equipment for the Optical Shop.
  • Conducts annual physical inventories.
  • Prepares patient Medicaid, Medicare, Eye Treatment, Ward of Court, Workmen Compensation forms for filing.
  • Observes and supervises all financial transactions.
  • Assumes responsibility for various bookkeeping functions such as posting, pricing, copying, checking monthly statements, billing, etc.
  • Prepares periodic and special reports as requested by Manager.
  • Responsible for Medicaid/Medicare filing, indigent filing of claims and follows up on refilings.
  • Maintains all records and accurate daily patient log sheet.
  • Assumes responsibilities for deposits and payments from appropriate gift funds.
  • Determines the patient's ability to pay for Optical services.
  • Maintains rapport with doctors, clinic and administrative personnel.
  • Attends seminars for continuing education in Optics.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and completion of a six-week course in optical training.
  • Minimum of four years' experience performing work related to optical activities and associated general clerical duties.
  • Licenses/Certification required: ABO Certification and/or continuing studies desirable.
  • Skills in using Vertomer, electronic glass cleaner, P.D. Stick, Pupilometer, and other equipment/instruments for fitting/repair of eyeglasses.
  • Effective interpersonal communication, courtesy/tact, and ability to use age-appropriate communication skills.
  • Record keeping skills, ability to keep accurate patient account balances, and use of calculator and standard office equipment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology applicable to Ophthalmology.
  • Techniques in fitting/dispensing/repair of eyewear.
  • Administrative functions including billing/purchasing/pricing.
