About The Position

This position is a formal NYS apprenticeship in partnership with the Career Progression Program (CPP) of the National Academy of Opticianry. It involves training and technical instruction focused on providing comprehensive patient care, including patient evaluation, prescription recommendations, eyewear selection, fitting, and coordination with other healthcare professionals, with an emphasis on retail sales.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) and at least six months of retail optical experience, or possession of NYS Training Permit for Ophthalmic and/or Contact Lens Dispensing, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must obtain a NYS Training permit and register with the CPP upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate service support including inventory management, equipment maintenance, and requisitioning of supplies.
  • Use specialized software to maintain customer database and report financial transactions.
  • Fill ophthalmic eyeglass prescriptions specified by the MD or OD and make final adjustments to eyewear for patient satisfaction.
  • Assist patients in selecting frames based on style, color, and prescription, and instruct them on the care of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Maintain retail inventory by meeting with sales representatives, ordering frames, lenses, and other supplies, and creating attractive merchandise displays.
