Position Summary This position will provide optical integration, metrology, and systems engineering support for spacecraft, flight and non‑flight instruments, and associated ground support equipment. Work includes installation, alignment, testing, verification, calibration, and documentation support across development, integration, pre‑flight, and post‑flight operations. Primary Responsibilities Perform optical integration activities including installation, alignment, testing, verification, and calibration of spacecraft and instrument hardware. Provide optical and mechanical metrology support for spacecraft, flight and non‑flight instruments, components, and assemblies. Support requirements development, verification, and environmental simulation testing, including data analysis and modeling. Fabricate and use specialized optical fixtures and tooling within GSFC facilities. Assemble and develop flight and non‑flight optical systems in accordance with Work Instructions (WIs) and Work Order Authorizations (WOAs). Generate and support technical documentation such as WIs, WOAs, procedures, plans, reports, and data summaries. Manage and support laboratory operations as required. Maintain, calibrate, control, and track equipment, tools, software, and support hardware, including property management activities.

Requirements

  • Optical & Metrology Software and Analysis Experience with commercial software tools for acquisition, reduction, and analysis of metrology data (including point cloud, vector, and interferometric data).
  • Experience with GSFC-developed theodolite metrology and alignment software.
  • Expertise in spatial data analysis for alignment verification.
  • Experience with interferometric data analysis for wavefront, surface error, and component alignment assessments.
  • Ability to obtain or develop expertise in additional analysis tools as project
  • Optical Technician Capabilities Optical and structural bonding
  • Optical inspection and surface inspection
  • Cleaning, maintenance, calibration, storage, and transport of precision optical instruments
  • Operation and care of specialty optical ground support equipment (e.g., collimators, reference optics, scale bars, calibration references)
  • Operation and maintenance of machining and metrology equipment within branch staff shops
  • Instrumentation Experience Levels, alignment telescopes, theodolites
  • Laser trackers and laser radars
  • Coordinate measuring machines (contact and non-contact)
  • Photogrammetry systems
  • Interferometers (distance measuring and Fizeau-type)
  • General optical and mechanical metrology instrumentation

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting spaceflight, atmospheric flight (balloon/aircraft), ground-based instruments, or related NASA programs
  • Familiarity with GSFC laboratory environments and procedures
  • Strong documentation, communication, and teamwork skills
