About The Position

Lockheed Martin's MFC Business Area is looking for an optical engineer to support the Orlando, FL location. We are looking for an immediate start date but are willing to wait until early 2027 for a full-time candidate to begin. In this role, you will design, analyze, and test complex optical designs in EO systems, primarily military fire control, missile, and laser systems. This position requires an understanding of the production and development of electro-optical fire control and missile systems. You will conduct research and develop manufacturing, integration, and alignment processes for EO systems. The selected candidate will also troubleshoot system hardware issues and develop optical system concepts, layout, and detailed design, applying knowledge of geometrical and physical optics. Additional responsibilities will require you to: - Apply research results to achieve desired results in hardware. - Support subcontractor improvements and program cost reduction activities. - Initiate / support optics-related manufacturing producibility or cost-saving activities. - Be familiar with an optical design code (CodeV) for analysis (tolerancing) purposes. - Maintain the overall system optical prescription and tolerance analyses and update as required. - Be willing to travel to optics suppliers in support of program requirements and schedule.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Optics, Physics, or a similar major. Pursuing a master's degree is highly preferred. Pursuing a bachelor's degree is acceptable.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, multi-tasking, R&D or integrated product development team environment.
  • Strong aptitude in engineering mathematics and/or ability to correlate theory with hardware design or system response. Ideally this would include familiarity with optical hardware, optics theory, etc.
  • Ability to support design layout, tolerances, and detail lens drawings.
  • Ability to obtain a US DoD security clearance.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to support business needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with optical component manufacturing, optical metrology techniques, and optical assembly manufacturing methods and mounting techniques.
  • Knowledge of geometrical and physical optics or optical aberration theory.
  • Fluency with CodeV (preferred) or Zemax software for optical design and tolerance analysis and performance optimization.
  • Familiarity with optical materials, including infrared materials.
  • Experienced in generating optic prescriptions for visible through long-wave IR applications.
  • Knowledge of basic radiometry and Electro-Optical analysis fundamentals.
  • Proficient in the use of optical tooling, interferometers, and optical inspection techniques.
  • Working knowledge of lasers and coherent beam analysis.
  • Able to communicate with mechanical designers and optics suppliers and assist with manufacturing issues.
  • Proficiency in Windows/Microsoft Office Suite: Windows, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Good writing and oral communication skills.
  • An active secret DoD clearance is highly preferred.
