About the position

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) administers the Compensation & Pension (C&P) Program for benefits to Veterans, Service Members, their dependents, and their survivors. On October 9, 1996, Congress enacted Public Law 104-275 which authorized VA to contract for medical examinations (a critical piece of evidence for determining the extent of permanent impairment) from non-VA medical sources. This Project is established in support of the VA effort to provide disability examination services. The Ophthalmologist will provide specialized ophthalmic expertise within the multi-disciplinary team with the primary role of evaluating patients for ocular conditions that may be attributable to military service. The Ophthalmologist must be able to properly evaluate conditions and clearly provide written evaluation notes via required forms.

Responsibilities

  • Provide private-sector Medical Disability Examinations (MDEs) on behalf of the VA.
  • Upload all completed Disability Benefit Questionnaires (DBQs) to the provided secure website daily.
  • Ensure case closure within 48 hours.
  • Provide vision testing and evaluation of visual conditions.
  • Refer patients for more specialized evaluation if required.
  • Diagnose ocular diseases and injuries.
  • Ensure all medical records are correct and maintained.
  • Provide clinical reporting to the Project Medical Director.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical guidelines and SOPs.
  • Maintain and improve clinical quality through audit and quality improvement activities.
  • Understand and comply with company policies and procedures related to clinical care.

Requirements

  • Current and unrestricted license to practice in the US, US Territory or Canada.
  • American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Certification (BLS).
  • Medical Degree (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Board certified or board eligible in Ophthalmology.
  • Experience with adult patients.
