About The Position

This position is the breastfeeding peer counselor coordinator for St Lucie County WIC Program and coordinates the breastfeeding peer counseling (BPC) program and coordinates the work of breastfeeding peer counselor staff. The role involves recruiting and interviewing potential peer counselors, training them, mentoring new counselors, and providing ongoing supervision. The coordinator participates in program meetings, monitors caseloads, reviews client records, and documents observations of peer counselors. Additionally, the coordinator provides lactation counseling, answers the WIC breastfeeding warm line, and coordinates breast pump needs for eligible mothers. The position also includes responsibilities for training WIC employees, maintaining inventory of breast pumps, and completing necessary documentation.

Requirements

  • Willing to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours in a Special Needs Shelter.
  • Currently have one or more of the following credentials: IBCLC or CLC willing to obtain IBCLC.
  • One year of experience counseling breastfeeding women.
  • Proficient in computer skills and applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or at least 8 college courses in Health Sciences.
  • Experience working in the WIC department.
  • Experience as a supervisor or team leader.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the breastfeeding peer counseling program and staff.
  • Recruit and interview potential peer counselors.
  • Train and mentor new peer counselors.
  • Provide ongoing supervision for peer counselor staff.
  • Participate in breastfeeding program meetings.
  • Monitor work caseload of peer counselors.
  • Review client record notes for adequacy.
  • Document observations of peer counselors' duties.
  • Participate in statewide Peer Counselor Coordinator conference calls.
  • Provide lactation counseling for clients.
  • Answer the WIC breastfeeding warm line within 48 hours.
  • Coordinate breast pump needs and referrals.
  • Assist with annual breastfeeding training for WIC employees.
  • Maintain inventory of breast pumps and supplies.
  • Complete time in People First, EARS, and travel as required.
  • Assist in completing nutrition program plan objectives.
