About The Position

The OPS Fish & Wildlife Technician position at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission focuses on maintaining and improving public access opportunities on FWC-managed areas. Requirements

  • Ability to perform a variety of skilled trade functions and physical labor using assorted hand, power, and gasoline tools.
  • Ability to maintain all equipment in safe, usable condition.
  • Ability to operate ATVs, 4x4 vehicles, paddlecraft, and small powerboats.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals of varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in remote areas under inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret maps and charts, and use a compass and GPS.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with prescribed fire activities (not required).

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, assess, clean, maintain, and repair public access infrastructure such as signs, trails, kiosks, boardwalks, and wildlife observation platforms.
  • Conduct general handyman work.
  • Develop relationships with local recreation groups including hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling, fishing, and hunting.
  • Propose new public access opportunities for potential implementation.
  • Provide assistance to FWC-managed area staff on various projects.
  • Clear, mark, and maintain recreational trails.
  • Monitor recreational use and its impacts.
  • Construct amenities such as camping platforms and benches.
  • Conduct monitoring of trails and facilities to ensure they meet agency and state requirements.
  • Participate in outreach programs, interacting with users and attending user group meetings.
