About The Position

The Environmental Specialist I, position number 37940109, is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Biology Program’s Taxonomy-Molecular Group in Tallahassee, Florida. Harmful algal blooms continue to be a high priority concern for our state leaders. Biology’s FlowCam Cyano instrument generates quantitative sample metrics for algal bloom samples. This position’s main responsibilities are algal sample prep and analysis on the FlowCam instrument. This position will also cross-train in other workgroups on sample preparation, data entry, and other general laboratory duties. The Environmental Specialist I duties help streamline the flow of work so sample results can be reported to customers accurately and efficiently.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic concepts, and techniques for aquatic biology, ecology, and environmental sciences.
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions for laboratory analysis, including laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and QA/QC.
  • Ability to complete repetitive tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to accurately track, collect, record, review, and analyze laboratory data.
  • Skill in use of computers, including Microsoft Office software and internet resources.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work at counter height for long stretches of time.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.
  • Ability to use laboratory personal protective equipment and work with acids, acetone, formalin, and other chemicals.
  • Ability to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments within a given deadline.
  • Ability to think and work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to be adaptable, flexible, resourceful and to maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • At least four years of verifiable related experience in biological, natural, environmental, or physical sciences.
  • Post-secondary degrees from an accredited college or university with a major in biological, natural, environmental, or physical sciences may be used as an alternative for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • A credential evaluation report from an approved agency must be submitted along with all foreign degrees.
  • An official transcript is required of the selected candidate to confirm qualifications for the position.
