About The Position

This office-based position provides administrative support for the Imperiled Species Management Section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation. This position serves in a critical role as a member of the environmental commenting team to ensure protections for marine turtles, manatees, bears and panthers are applied throughout Florida by providing customer service, project management, technical assistance, accessing agency files and documents, and will use agency resources to review, screen, and log projects for commenting to deliver initial project materials for agency staff.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and five (5) years of professional experience in a closely related biological field or laboratory program is required.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field can substitute for four of the five years of required experience.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and apply detailed technical information.
  • Knowledge of wildlife conservation and management principles, techniques, strategies, and regulations.
  • Ability to organize and maintain records management systems.
  • Skills and knowledge in Microsoft Office, GIS, SharePoint, internet browsers, Adobe, and Google Earth.
  • Skilled in effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to work independently and on teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff, the public and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of basic office practices and principles.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze data to solve problems, document workflow and other activities relating to the improvement of operational and management practices.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to participate in limited statewide travel are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with regulatory programs and/or managing databases are desired.
  • Experience with MS Office, MS SharePoint, and database tracking systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor inboxes and shared files within the Imperiled Species Management section for identification, logging, and management related to the review of environmental regulatory permits, comprehensive plans, technical assistance requests, and other project types.
  • Conduct initial screening of projects and correspondence, perform data entry in the FWC Project Tracking System, and archive agency comments.
  • Review permit applications for minor activities to draft biological opinions for regulatory and planning authorizations.
  • Review, update, and maintain guideline documents and SOPs for the FWC Project Tracking System and assist with and prepare reports.
  • Assist with processing and distributing orders for outreach publications, decals, and materials.
  • Participate in meetings and functions across FWC’s organizational structure by providing skills and expertise wherever needed or as directed.
  • Coordinate with FWC staff and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as directed, including but not limited to: answer phone calls, take meeting notes, assist with tracking active projects, assist with education and outreach projects and events, assist with field activities, such as site visits and data collection, and maintain vehicles within the Imperiled Species Management section.
