About The Position

This position performs preliminary examinations of patients with ocular complaints, diseases, and/or disorders by initiating and performing technical tests exclusively used in Ophthalmology. This caregiver provides information to and consults with ophthalmologists and optometrists who are in the diagnosis and treatment of patients Essential Functions Improve clinic and physician efficiency by performing advanced testing, which includes: IOL Master scan, LenStar scan, Goldmann Visual Fields, Tangent Screen Visual Fields, Manual B/P and HR, Wave Front scan, Visante Anterior Segment OCT, Contact and Immersion A Scan biometry, Retinoscopy, and FM100 Color Vision. Perform advanced lensometry including the following: identification and measuring of Fresnel, ground-in prism, slab off, and measurement and conversion of vertex distance. Determine add power for bifocals/trifocals Describe the indications, contraindications, and potential side effects of: • Mydriatics and cycloplegics • Glaucoma medications • Anti-infective agents, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic • Allergy medications • Steroids • non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs • Ocular lubricants • Anesthetics • Diagnostic agents • Nutritional supplements • Anti-neovascular drugs • Provide patient instruction regarding medications Explain and care for ocular prosthetics, contact lenses, spectacles, and other devices Measure • Conversion, perform contact lens fitting: • Soft rigid • Toric • Bifocal Perform intermediate ocular motility testing, including cover/uncover/alternate cover testing, Maddox rod testing, worth 4-dot test, Hirschberg, Krimsky, near point accommodation, near point conversion, and fusional convergence amplitudes. Interpret the reliability and validity of test results and seek additional guidance from the physician to determine the appropriate treatment procedure. Maintain instruments and tools in the clinic through routine maintenance, cleaning, and verification of calibration. May perform Ex ophthalmometry, and corneal sensitivity testing, collecting cultures and biopsy specimens, may assist in ophthalmic imaging as needed, including fluorescein angiography, endothelial cell count, and B-scans.

Requirements

  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Demonstrated experience as an Ophthalmic Technician, Ophthalmic Assistant, or Optometric Technician.
  • Experience in cataract surgery counseling for patients.
  • EMR experience.
  • Possesses a level of computer literacy that ensures accuracy and timeliness when working with patients.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician, Ophthalmic Assistant, or Optometric Technician
  • Spanish speaking preferred
