Responsible for assisting in the care, treatment and education of the patient. An ophthalmic tech works with the ophthalmologist to provide patient care by performing many different eye-related clinical functions. These may include taking histories, performing various procedures and tests, and preparing patient to see the doctor. The ophthalmic tech provides the ophthalmologist with important information to help diagnose and treat the patients.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow physicians orders, communicate with patient in supportive manner and maintain professional manner.
  • Ability to assess needs of patient and department and respond accordingly.
  • Ability to work in a team approach toward providing quality patient care.
  • Ability to handle multiple task at one time, ability to be flexible and follow detailed instructions.
  • Skill in effectively role modeling appropriate behavior.
  • Ability to learn how to operate ophthalmic equipment. This includes Sonomed A-scan, IOL Master, Auto-refractor, Automated Lensometer, Amsler grid, Stereo test, Ishihara's test for colour blindness, worth 4 dot, and glare test.
  • Must be able to work 40 hours a week, starting time for ophthalmology department is 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. (actually works out to 2 ½ hours of overtime per week).
  • Must be able to multi-task.
  • Must be a team player.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains medical histories from patient.
  • Administers diagnostic test.
  • Measures and records vision.
  • Administers eye medications.
  • Maintains optical and surgical instruments.
  • Assisting the ophthalmologist in office surgical procedures.
  • Set up, stock and equip exam and procedure rooms.
  • Sterilize and clean rooms and equipment after each use.
  • Notify patients of test results as instructed by the physician.
  • Task list is maintained and cleared daily.
  • Provide support in the department when necessary. Team player.
  • Ability to be crossed trained to cover scheduling surgeries and helping answers incoming calls.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to all MMC policies and procedures.
  • Assist patients in helping them from the waiting room to exam room.
  • Make patients happy
  • Answers all the patient's questions.
  • Coordinating patient scheduling.
  • Supervising and training other ophthalmic personnel
