About The Position

The Ophthalmology Technician is responsible for preparing the patient for their eye examination prior to being seen by providers within the Department of Ophthalmology. The Ophthalmology Technician works directly with patient care. The technician's duties are measurement of visual acuity, manual lensometry, tonometry, pupil evaluation, anterior chamber depth measurement, instillation of eye medications, color vision testing, patient medical history, assisting with laser procedures, assisting with minor surgical procedures and instructions to patients and/or individuals accompanying patients. Data derived from these tests are presented to the staffing Ophthalmologist/Optometrist. The Ophthalmology Technician is expected to establish and maintain professional interaction with patients, physicians and allied health staff and participate as a member of the Ophthalmology staff with various tasks as assigned by Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor and Ophthalmic Assistant Lead.

Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent is required
  • Strong communication and organization skills are needed
  • must be able to work independently
  • meet special needs of a diverse patient population
  • provide competent assistance with laser procedures
  • function in a high-paced, multi-specialty area
  • assist in other technical duties
  • Basic computer knowledge is necessary and must be capable of learning new computer skills and adapting to the Electronic Environment on an ongoing basis
  • must possess a friendly and helpful approach to patient care
  • Employee will be trained on the job
