About The Position

The University of Kansas Medical Center is seeking an Ophthalmologist, Cornea Specialist to join our team! Faculty member will be expected to provide clinical, teaching and research duties, as their experience and interest allows. On-call duties will be on a shared rotation based on the number of faculty members. Faculty will also supervise medical students and residents in clinics and surgeries as well as participate in the didactic teaching program. Candidates interested in research may be afforded protected time to complete clinical and bench research, but all candidates will be encouraged to participate in clinical research and scientific presentations at national/regional meetings in addition to their clinical and teaching duties. Tenure track appointments are full-time with an initial probationary period of seven years. Criteria for promotion includes significant achievements in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The award of tenure is based on potential for sustained contributions, performing beyond expected duties, and demonstrating leadership and innovation in activities that enhance the reputation of the University. The Clinical Scholar Track is for full-time faculty members who are heavily involved in clinical service, education, and related scholarship. This track has two career paths: Clinician-Educator concentrating on teaching and Clinician-Investigator for concentrating on research/scholarship. Significant contributions in professional and academic service are required for both paths.

Requirements

  • Medical Doctorate or equivalent degree, board eligible or board certified in Ophthalmology and successful completion of a surgical Cornea fellowship.
  • Licensed in the State of Kansas of eligible for licensure in Kansas,
  • This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.
  • Experience in a clinical and surgical Cornea practice and OR settings.

Nice To Haves

  • Academic background involving teaching with interest in clinical or basic research is preferred.
  • Experience in growing own research programs with the ability to obtain funding from public and private sources is desired.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously, ability to manage competing and shifting priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide services as an Ophthalmology, Cornea Specialist, comprising of comprehensive clinics and surgery days.
  • Participate in the didactic teaching program including supervising medical students and residents.
  • Participate in the shared rotation of call coverage, inpatient consults and JayDoc clinics.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with patients as monitored by the hospital's patient experience survey.
  • Serve on departmental committees and provide other service to the School of Medicine and the University as needed.
  • Participate in clinical research and scientific presentations at national/regional meetings as appropriate with academic track.
  • Provide clinical and surgical services to the VA and/or other sites under Professional Services Agreement with The University of Kansas Health System
