About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician assists Physicians with diagnostic testing, examination, education, and treatment of patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant
  • Patient care experience required
  • Knowledge of Ophthalmology terminology, eye anatomy and medical terminology
  • Accurate refraction and applanation skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to convey and receive information effectively (face-to-face, telephone and electronic)
  • Good analytical and judgment skills
  • Ability to use computer software programs and systems
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patients, personnel and/or financial data
  • Excellent organizational skills to work independently, prioritize, handle multiple tasks and manage time
  • Compliance with departmental Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Mandatory TB test annually (based on Department guidelines)

Nice To Haves

  • Retina scoping experience preferred
  • 1-3 years experience in an Ophthalmology practice preferred

Responsibilities

  • Greet and escort patients to examination rooms; obtain patient consents and insurance information
  • Escort patients to and from various destinations; assist patients in and out of examination chairs
  • Obtain ocular, medical and family histories; document/update accurately in patients’ electronic medical record
  • Explain procedures to patients
  • Perform initial patient examinations by measuring, comparing and testing pupils including visual acuity, extraocular movements, eye pressure, color vision, etc.
  • Perform automated and manual testing procedures including corneal topography, autorefraction, application, contrast sensitivity, tonometry, Goldman and Humphrey visual fields, Optical Coherence Tomography, A-Scans and B-Scans, etc. as directed by the physicians
  • Administer anesthetics, dilation drops, ointments and medications as directed by the physicians
  • Assist physicians with minor surgery and patient monitoring
  • Complete paperwork for physicians
  • Provide information and educational materials to patients concerning procedures and surgeries
  • Participate in patient follow-up activities; assist patients with scheduling appointments and verify surgery schedules
  • Maintain and clean equipment and examination rooms and working areas; stock rooms and/or order supplies
  • Answer and triage patient telephone calls
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and/or practice
