About The Position

Our multi-subspecialty Ophthalmology practice is seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Triage Technician to join our clinical support team. This is a phone-based role focused on assessing patient symptoms, triaging ocular complaints, and routing patients appropriately based on urgency. The ideal candidate will have extensive ophthalmic clinical experience, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to make informed decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
  • 5+ years of ophthalmic clinical experience required
  • Strong working knowledge of ophthalmic emergencies and the ability to accurately triage over the phone
  • Familiarity with ophthalmic surgical procedures and post-operative care
  • Provides excellent patient care and is energetic and empathetic with patients
  • Must comply with HIPAA confidentiality standards when communicating patient information
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a professional and compassionate demeanor
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and strong commitment to timely follow-through
  • Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow
  • Desire to gain industry knowledge and training
  • Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals
  • Ability to grow, adapt, and accept change
  • Consistently creates a positive work environment by being team-oriented and patient-focused
  • Commitment to work over 40 hours to meet the needs of the business
  • Ability to work weekends when applicable
  • Reliable transportation that would allow employee to go to multiple work locations with minimal notice
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems
  • Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications

Nice To Haves

  • Experience across multiple ophthalmic subspecialties preferred
  • Optical experience is a plus, but not required
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for patients calling with eye-related complaints, post-operative concerns, medication questions, or urgent symptoms
  • Use established triage protocols and clinical judgment to determine the urgency of patient issues and direct them to the appropriate provider or clinic
  • Document all patient interactions thoroughly and accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Educate patients on post-operative expectations, medication instructions, and when to seek emergency care
  • Collaborate closely with Physicians, clinical technicians, and administrative teams to support seamless patient care
  • Maintain accuracy and consistency in documenting symptoms, histories, and triage decisions
  • Assist with administrative tasks including scheduling, routing messages, and preparing provider communications
  • Utilize Excel for tracking, reporting, and documentation needs as assigned
  • Provide exceptional customer service during every patient encounter (in person or via phone)
  • Practice urgency at all times with patient’s time, as well as Doctor’s time and schedule
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures, including HIPAA
  • General office duties and cleaning to be assigned by manager
